Bodegas Gómez de segura

Tempranillo
A red variety that stands on 90% of our vineyards. Harvesting takes place at the beginning of October. With long, drooping bunches, the vine has very broad shoulders. Its must forms the base of quality wines thanks to its healthy balance between alcohol content, colour and moderate acidity.
Viura
A white variety that produces large winged and drooping bunches of grapes. Its wines are moderate, smooth, well-balanced, and fresh, with a characteristic very pale colour and fruity aroma.

Malvasia
A rare white variety which is also categorised as one of the oldest varieties of vine. Its bunches are medium-large in size, pyramidal in shape, strongly winged and of medium-high compactness. The must is aromatic, golden, very acidic and with a slightly bitter taste. It produces tannic and special wines, and because its grapes are so sensitive, very few producers choose to work with it.
Soil
The soil on which our vineyards stand is calcareous-clay. It is a poor soil and its constitution is dominated by deep, more or less gravelly limestone of medium or light consistency, soft and very healthy.

Location
Bodegas Gómez de Segura owns 53 hectares of vineyards in Laguardia, known internationally as one of the most prestigious winemaking areas.
In addition, it is a privileged area with a specific microclimate thanks to its location between the Cantabria Mountains and the Ebro River. The vineyards average 41 years of age.

Climate
Our vineyards are protected from the harshness of the Cantabrian climate by the significant Sierra de Cantabria mountains, which also confer upon them a Mediterranean-type climate. On the one hand, the high altitude protects the region from the cold and humid north-westerly winds that here become dry, warm winds, and on the other hand, the vineyards’ southern orientation on sloping foothills ensures that the vine receives the full potential of the sunlight and so the grapes ripen much better.

Old vineyards
At Bodegas Gómez de Segura, we have 53 hectares of vineyards classified as old, which gives us greater opportunities that young vines will never achieve, in the sense that, although output volumes are lower, the depth of the roots reach a greater wealth of minerals, thus producing more complex wines.

Goblet pruning
Another special feature of our vineyards is that all the vines are goblet pruned to ensure that throughout the entire vineyard, a keen balance is maintained between plant health and its production. Likewise, the bunches of grapes are always well aligned, which leads to healthier grapes that ripen in a more uniform fashion.

Respect for the environment
At Bodegas Gómez de Segura, our Integrated Production techniques are compatible with protecting and improving the Environment, natural resources, energy diversity, and soil and landscape conservation. In this regard, we never use herbicides and weeds are removed mechanically. Furthermore, we only fertilise with natural sheep manure to ensure the physical-chemical properties of the soil remain unchanged. And when strictly necessary, any plant health treatments are sulphur- and copper-based.
